Understand the existing building first
A farmhouse may have been altered over several periods. Have the actual supporting structure, floor levels and condition surveyed. Age or appearance alone does not establish the foundation or wall construction.
Make old and new work together
Compare a modest connection with an extension that clearly expresses a new chapter. Preserve the main form and important facade details. For listed buildings or protected areas, discuss possible alterations with the municipality early.
Prepare a survey file
Gather existing drawings, photographs of junctions and your proposed layout. An open yard may help transport, but check the ground, gates, trees and services. Standard extension prices do not include restoration or assessment of the existing building.
| Element | What to consider |
|---|---|
| Yard and sightlines | Show access and the relationship between buildings in the plan. |
| Existing structure | Investigate the actual construction and connections. |
Make the old-to-new connection legible
Identify defining lines: eaves, window heights and the balance of solid wall and openings. An extension need not copy them literally but should respond deliberately. Survey junctions and floor levels first. Older buildings may reveal dimensional or structural differences only during investigation.
