Decide how you will use the garden room

A sheltered outdoor area and a heated room have different requirements. Decide whether you want to live and work there in winter or mainly extend the outdoor season.

Open it when you can

Consider opening sections, ventilation and protection from sun and wind. The view, position on the plot and route to the house shape how the room feels.

A sheltered space with a clear purpose

Decide what stays in the garden room permanently and what you remove in winter. This helps select glazing, openings, flooring and moisture protection. If you want a heated room for everyday use, specify that explicitly. An attractive outdoor room is not automatically suitable as full living accommodation and does not automatically count toward the house’s living area.

Plan comfortable open and closed use

Mark where sliding panels sit when fully open. Are seating and circulation still usable? Check ventilation when rain or wind forces the glass closed. Agree the seasons and conditions the system is intended for; a sheltered garden room is not automatically a fully heated living space.
